Starlancer was a military space sim made by Chris Roberts in collaboration with his brother Erin Roberts.[1]
It was made by Warthog Games and Digital Anvil which Chris Roberts co founded after having left Origin Systems in 1997.
It is a spiritual successor to Privateer.[2]
it told the story of a war in this solar system between familiar Earth nations.
The team working on Starlancer was the same team that had been working on Privateer 2 at Digital Anvil, and afterwards started Warthog Games.[3] The core of that team moved on to become Traveler's Tales Fusion, and has since been brought into the Cloud Imperium Games family to work on Squadron 42.[4]
The game introduced a video broadcast and a virtual newsletter informing the player about what's going on in the war, helping to see the bigger picture.
There was a Dreamcast version released.
Martin Galway worked on the speech and sound effects.[5]
Freelancer is the sequel to Starlancer, taking place some 800 years later.
