A patrol vessel (also referred to as a patrol craft, patrol ship, or patrol boat) is a relatively small spaceship generally designed for planetary defence, border security, or law enforcement. There are many designs for patrol boats, and they generally range in size. They may be operated by a nation's navy, coast guard, police, or customs, and may be intended for interstellar, intrasystem, or orbital environments.
Patrol vessels are usually commanded by junior officers and usually belong to the medium or large size categories. Next larger class is a Corvette.
