Early Life

Born in 1967 and raised in suburban New York City, he spent his teenage years in the Chicago area. When he graduatred high school he realized he wanted to do something in the movie business, so he went to Los Angeles and to the University of Southern California in 1985. He began enrolling in all the Film classes he could, subsidizing his student loans with freelance titles and graphics work he did for student films. Becoming a fixture at the USC School of Cinema-Television, he helped run the Post Production Department in his Sophomore year, all the while turned down time and again by the admissions office. After two years of maintaining an undeclared status at the university, and six rejection letters from the Cinema School, Dochterman chose to look for work and set out on his own.[5]

A year of working as a model builder, prop maker, graphic artist and gofer followed, giving him much needed professional experience, and allowing him to pay rent. It's his friendship with a fellow student that led him to work for James Cameron to help restore full size props and models from the Aliens movie. This then led to his entry into movie production with a job as Assistant to the Art department on Cameron’s The Abyss. [5]

This baptism gave him the crash course for filmmaking and conceptual artistry as he took on the various roles of sculptor, model builder, draughtsman, graphic artist, and illustrator as the needs arose. He delved into painting, colored pencil, marker illustration, and expanded his love for doing graphite illustrations. Working along-side the great Ron Cobb and forging friendships with artists Steve Burg and Phill Norwood, Dochterman began his apprenticeship and commenced his journey.[5]

Trivia

  • He is behind The Empire Strikes Quack and Kirk Korner, the first being the original Star Wars films edited to the complete soundtrack of Warner Bros. Cartoon, Duck Dodgers in the 24 1/2 Century, and the second being blurbs from the scripts of Star Trek episodes rendered in a manner not unlike Coffee House Poetry.
