John Schimmel is Executive Producer at Cloud Imperium Games.[1]
Works at CIG
He was invited by Chris Roberts as Story Consultant to work with Dave Haddock who was the only writer at that time, later joined by Will Weissbaum in order to craft the story for Squadron 42. Around 2013 he joined CIG full time as Head of Linear Content.[1]
He produced the motion capture shoot in 2015-2016 at The Imaginarium.[1]
He ran global video production.[1] He worked on commercials and Inside CIG videos.[2]
As of 2023 he is producing the performance and motion capture shoots, he supervised the buildout of Stage 6, CIG motion capture studio.[1]
Other Works
After migrating to New York he was playing bass at the La MaMa Experimental Theater in the band for the La MaMa African American Company. They then migrated to Joe Papp Public Theater.[3]
He spent about 15 years in New York playing in various shows including Broadway shows. He was the musical director of the Jewish Orchestra in the Cherry Orchard.[1]
After reading an article about nuclear terrorism and sent it to a screenwriter friend thinking there was a movie in this. They wrote the movie together and sold it to Fox. While the movie did not get made, John Schimmel was bitten by the movie bug.[2]
He co wrote Pump Boys and Dinettes, which got a Tony Awards nomination.[4]
After moving to Los Angeles, he worked at Warner Brothers as a freelance script reader, then was hired in the story department and became a development and production executive. He started out helping identify scripts they wanted to acquire and then working to develop those which were optioned. Later, he became a studio presence on some of the films Warner Bros. was making.
He worked at Michael Douglas and Steve Reuther Douglas-Reuther Productions among others on Face Off and Rainmaker. He then helped set up Furthur Films with Michael Douglas where he was creative producer, then when Steve Reuther started Belair Entertainment John Schimmel went there. He eventually went to work at Ascendant Pictures where he became president of production.[2][5]
He teaches screenwriting at the University of California and creative producing at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts Film School.[5]
He wrote the book Screenwriting Behind Enemy Lines.[6]
Early Life
He was a bass player in college and joined Elizabeth Swados playing at folk festivals for Pete Seeger Clearwater Festival before playing in New York where he was going to math graduate school at the Corona Institute in New York University. He dropped out and went to work in theaters.[3][1]
