The Mantis is a single-seat interdiction vessel developed by Roberts Space Industries. It possesses the ability to extract targets from quantum travel through a mechanism known as "Quantum Enforcement." With minimal armament and armor, the Mantis is intended to operate alongside more heavily armed law enforcement agencies or pirates to engage with the apprehended vessels. [1][2]

Features

Quantum Enforcement Device
The Mantis features a Quantum Enforcement Device (QED) with three rings at the rear, designed to inhibit Quantum Travel. It can be activated via "Quantum Snare" or "Quantum Dampening." While not standard on all ships initially, QEDs are expected to be integrated into various vessels. Usage of the QED must comply with legal regulations; non-compliance is unlawful.[2]
Quantum Snare
It is the main application of the Quantum Electrodynamics system (QED), designed for events within a 10 to 20-kilometer radius. It creates a "bubble" around a vessel, forcibly disengaging any ship inside from Quantum travel and extracting vessels that pass through. Activating the Quantum Snare requires a lengthy charging period and substantial energy, generating significant heat.[1]
Quantum Dampening
This is the secondary usage of the QED, preventing the activation of quantum drives within a short range while active (approx. 2000m). In contrast to the Snare, Dampening can be activated instantly, trapping lone unwary ships as long as they are within its radius.[1]
Quantum Markers
Along with the Quantum Enforcement Device, the Mantis can utilize Quantum Markers to track potential targets.[1]
Living quarters
The Mantis is designed for extended quantum travel, and as such, it will include a sleeping area and restroom facilities.[1]

Trivia

  • The Mantis derives its name from a group of large, typically green insects that are closely related to grasshoppers and cockroaches. These insects are known for their predatory behavior, capturing other insects using their robust, spiny front legs.[3]
