The Starfarer is a large Refueling vessel developed by Musashi Industrial and Starflight Concern. It distinguishes itself from conventional bulk freighters primarily by serving as a specialized fuel platform. It is engineered not only to load, store, and safeguard fuel stasis units but also to extract and refine space-borne gases for utilization without the need to land. In addition to its proficiency in fuel management, the Starfarer is capable of transporting standard bulk cargo pods.[1][2]

Features

Fuel Tanker
One of the main functions of the Starfarer is to serve as a fuel tanker, transporting hydrogen fuel throughout the 'Verse with the aid of its six large detachable tanks.[2]
Mobile refinery
Another primary function of the vessel entails traversing different star systems, collect raw hydrogen gases from areas near stars and other extrasolar sources, and refine the gases into a usable fuel.[2]
Refueler
An additional crucial role of the Starfarer is to act as a mobile refueling platform, providing support to a range of entities from extensive capital fleets to solitary ships that may be marooned in isolated areas.[2]
Cargo
In addition to transporting fuel, it possesses a substantial cargo capacity, capable of accommodating up to 291 SCU of goods.[1]
Weapons
The Starfarer is equipped with two forward-facing side remote turrets, each armed with a pair of Size 4 guns. Additionally, it features a top-mounted manned turret that also carries a pair of Size 4 guns, along with two rear-facing manned turrets, each outfitted with a pair of Size 3 guns. This formidable armament serves as a strong deterrent against potential pirate boarding attempts.[1]
Habitation
Despite its classification as an industrial vessel, it features a relatively comfortable mess hall and crew accommodations designed for up to seven personnel.[2]

Lore

The Starfarer came about as a result of an 18-month survey of space travel which resulted in a 15,000-page study on ship roles and the current shortcomings faced by space pilots. The study concluded with the decision to produce a spacecraft capable of fuel collection, refining, storage and distribution to other ships in flight.[3]

Development of the Starfarer began in 2870 as a result of MISC's study. Preceding this craft, the role was filled by a number of massive supertankers, notorious for being dangerous and ineffective.[4] This had lead to a pirate rule of thumb that "a ship caught refueling could be captured intact, as no captain would ever risk a firefight breaking out". The safety and ease of use of these crafts have seen them become the standard for space refueling, with many being upgraded with refining mechanisms that can refine collected fuel, ready for use. A final upgrade allows the fuel tanks to be swapped out altogether, to be replaced by a cargo chassis for goods transport. However, this has proven unpopular compared to the versatile Freelancer or the specialised Hull series.[3]

One way MISC envisioned making refueling safer with the Starfarer was to do the exact opposite of what it did with the Hull-Series, making a large hull capable of holding internal fuel tanks under armored protection. The ship still needed a way to process fuel, however. Addressing this need meant developing technology that could safely collect spaceborne hydrogen, something that pre-mass production was as expensive as the ship itself.[4]

While the initial reception to the Starfarer was poor, it wasn't anything that MISC hadn't predicted. Within six months of limited release sales, MISC had raised enough funds to establish new lines for the next seven years.[4] By 2878 MISC began offering modifications such as converting the fuel tanks to become liquid foodstuff storage units.[3] In 2895 amidst a need for a faster, more maneuverable, and better armored version of the Starfarer became apparent as the UEE fell prey to attacks by the Vanduul, leading to the advent of the Starfarer Gemini.[4]

Development

2016-03-26 The Starfarer became hangar ready in Star Citizen Alpha 2.3.0, and was the largest ship in game at that time.[2]
2016-05-25 The initial concept of the Starfarer is designed by Daren Dochterman (Freelance Conceptist), followed by Ted Beargeon (Freelance Conceptist), Gavin Rothery (Freelance Conceptist), and the UK ship design team.[5]
